About the Data

This dashboard uses Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) research estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The data shows employment counts by occupation within industries, allowing analysis of workforce composition across different sectors and geographic areas.

Research estimates provide industry-occupation matrices at the state level.

Understanding the Codes
SOC Codes (Occupations)

Standard Occupational Classification codes identify occupations:

  • 11-0000 = Major group (e.g., Management)
  • 11-1000 = Minor group (e.g., Top Executives)
  • 11-1021 = Detailed (e.g., General Managers)

NAICS Codes (Industries)

North American Industry Classification System:

  • 11 = Sector (2-digit)
  • 111 = Subsector (3-digit)
  • 1111 = Industry Group (4-digit)
How to Use This Dashboard
  1. Choose your perspective: Start from Industry (what jobs exist here?) or Occupation (where do these workers work? )
  2. Filter by detail level: Use 'sector' for big picture, '4-digit' for specific industries
  3. Read the treemap: Bigger tiles = more employment, darker tiles = higher counts
  4. Export data: Use the table buttons to download CSV, Excel, or PDF
  5. Go full screen: Click the expand icon on charts for a better view
  6. Compare states: Use the Compare States tab to see how occupations differ across regions
